Parting Shot

Just this last parting shot of what kayakers call the "Fish Ladder".  Hard right . . . then, adios as you drop vertically 10-12 feet (3-4m) to the channel below where you immediately have to take an equally hard left but against the water now plunging down onto you from the left. Of course, NO one tries this in these conditions no matter what his or her skill level.

The Caps

Sorry to all you Maple Leaf fans, but we're showing a little local pride here. The Caps, as we affectionately call them, have quite a loyal following.

There's a major thaw underway today and tomorrow, but more frigid temperatures are expected overnight Saturday.

It looks random, I know, but there are actually several ice hockey games going on here all at once after people created rinks width-wise across the canal.

Fish Ladder

The "Fish Ladder" is a series of Class V rapids (under certain conditions) carrying an estimated 10-20% of the Potomac River's total flow.

Frozen Falls

We speak of there being a Great Falls. And it's true, when most people think of Great Falls, they think of the main falls featured in yesterday's post. But the fact is that Great Falls is actually made up of numerous falls. Here's another smaller falls that has been completely frozen over.

Saturday, January 6, 2018

Because some of you were curious how the Great Falls area might look after all the cold weather we've been having, I gathered all the warmest clothes I could find (except my warm hat, of all things, that I forgot and left behind!), grabbed my camera, and headed down the trail to see what I could see. The first thing that caught my attention were all these little "icebergs" that had gotten caught in the eddy just below the main set of falls. They were just swirling round and round in a clockwise direction.

So as the sun began to fall late yesterday afternoon, so did the temps. We were at -9ºC and falling and heading to -13ºC.

Thursday, January 4, 2018

With temperatures sinking, it's time for a little indoor work, don't you think? Here's a study I did using my camera's internal flash in combination with a nearby lamp.

Per s.c.'s suggestion. :-)

Extreme Cold

I imagine this is a quite a different scene today. With the unusually cold temperatures we've been experiencing these past few days, this off-shoot of the Potomac is probably now has much more ice. People are actually skating and playing hockey on the C&O Canal. Even more bitter cold is expected beginning tonight.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone! It's a cold start. Not as cold as at Niagara Falls (-15ºC), but cold enough. It was -7ºC when I went out for a walk yesterday. Balmy for some, but not for me. I started to feel the cold even through two layers of gloves/mittens.
